Big Macs Will Be Wrapped in Nutritional Information

It probably won’t be long before the fast-food industry is forced to start labeling the foods they sell. However, fast- food giant McDonald’s is getting a jump on the competition by volunteering nutrition labels on their food packaging.

The colorful boxes that house the famous burgers, chicken nuggets, and other products will list fat, calories, carbohydrates, salt, protein, and other nutritional information. The special design of the new packaging even goes one step further by improving on normal labels with graphics that make the information easy to understand. The hope is that the nutrition facts provided on the food products will make customers more aware of what they are eating.

So, although you may decide on a Big Mac the first time around, after reading the nutrition info on the packaging and finding out it contains close to 50% of your recommended daily intake of fat, you may have the sense to choose more wisely next time around. Of course, it is up to consumers to read the label and make healthy choices for themselves.

The labels should start appearing on the packaging in late March of next year. In Canada, it is known that two nutrition labels will be found on the packaging — one from Nutrition Canada and one with McDonald’s own graphics.

If that’s not enough to grab the consumer’s attention and make them aware of what they are eating, then who can say what will work? Hopefully, other fast-food chains will follow in the footsteps of this corporate giant and soon unlabeled food products will become a thing of the past. With any luck, this will also result in healthier and skinnier customers, too.
