Could Your Job Be Expanding Your Waistline?

It seems that while we are working to increase our paychecks our waistlines are expanding as well. A survey conducted by CareerBuilder.com found that 47% of workers who were polled admitted to packing on a few extra pounds since they started working at their current jobs.

An office job where you sit all day and don’t move around only compounds the problem. Very few offices come equipped with a workout facility — or discounts for a gym membership for that matter. Even typical lunch hours are often not long enough to fit in a short workout.

This means that often employees have to find time before or after work to fit in a workout — and they have to foot the whole bill for a membership on their own.

While it would be nice if employers would acknowledge that a healthy employee is a happy one, employees must keep in mind that they only need 45 minutes of exercise a day to stay in shape — provided that they watch their portion sizes as well.

Incorporating 45 minutes of exercise into a day may seem daunting at first, but I guarantee that once you get in the groove, you will feel better and you will look forward to that time of the day. Not only will you feel more energized, but you will also feel healthier and less stressed as well.

Now, while in the office, you can also incorporate a few things to ensure that you keep your weight in check.

First, bring your lunch to work instead of eating out. When you pack your own lunch, you are more likely to pack healthier alternatives. Even making a sandwich at home versus buying your lunch in a mall food court can save you from consuming extra, unhealthy calories. Also, pack healthy snack options so that you don’t need to buy chocolate or chips from the vending machine in your office.

Drink water throughout the day. Often, when we think we are hungry, we are actually dehydrated. By having water on hand throughout the day, you can curb some of these cravings and thereby cut a few unnecessary calories at the same time.

Also, instead of calling a co-worker on the phone or sending them an e-mail, why not get up and walk over to their office instead? You can also try using the stairs instead of the elevator. Plus, consider going for a walk around the block during your lunch hour. All these little things will help you to control your waistline and keep you in shape no matter what your job involves.
