Before the advent of insulin, diabetes was basically a death sentence for people with the condition. These days, many people view diabetes as a much less serious disease.
Thanks to a wide range of pills, needles, and even inhalers, diabetes is becoming much easier to treat. However, even with new medical advancements in treating the condition, the war against this disease is far from being over.
As people become more complacent toward this serious issue, the number of people affected has reached epidemic proportions. Beyond that, diabetes is not as easily controlled, as most people believe.
As obesity and poor diet both become a larger problem, so will diabetes. And this is not a “one-complication-fits-all” kind of illness. The damage caused by diabetes is far ranging. The nerve damage caused to the feet of diabetics can often result in the amputation of toes or even the whole foot.
Kidney problems caused by diabetes could lead to years on dialysis or worse. And, of course, many people know that people with diabetes face a particularly high risk of heart problems. That means that even a very slender person with diabetes could suffer serious heart damage from the disease.
Doctors say that despite improving health campaigns and nutrition programs, there’s still a big risk that diabetes will continue to be a rising problem in North America. The trouble with diabetes is that many people suffer with the disease for years before they realize that there is anything wrong. And at that point, serious damage to the body may have already occurred.
For now, the best thing you can do is get tested for diabetes if you experience any symptoms or are in a risk group. If anyone in your family has diabetes, a history of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure or bad cholesterol levels, or you are inactive or overweight, then you may want to get tested even if you don’t have any symptoms.
You should certainly get tested if you are at risk and have been experiencing an increase in thirst and hunger, increased urination, blurry vision, poor wound healing, or rapid weight loss. These are all symptoms and signs of diabetes. When diabetes is caught early on, you have the best chance of living a long and healthy life.
