In the desperate hunt to find a cure for cancer, scientists fear that they may have originally overestimated the power of omega-3s. These are healthy fatty acids that are found in fish oil as well as some plant oils such as those from flax. They contain a whole lot of antioxidant power and a string of other healthy components.
Previous studies had suggested that omega-3s might be able to help prevent certain types of cancer. These included studies showing that people who ate diets that were naturally higher in omega-3s had reduced instances of cancer.
In some cases, animal studies using rats even showed that eating these supplements could reduce the risk of cancer. This was evident when the rats were exposed to mutagenic toxins. However, a recent study has debunked that evidence by reviewing these trials. In the end, they found that the overall effects of omega-3s weren’t significant enough to determine that these fatty acids could actually prevent cancer.
But don’t swear off supplements or healthy meals containing fish just yet. Omega-3s are good for much more than just dealing with cancer. The healthy oils inside have been proven to help lower bad LDL cholesterol and raise good HDL cholesterol. This can decrease the risk of heart disease. The type of fat found in these fish is known to be a much better option than saturated or trans fats, and it does a world of good inside your body.
What’s more, omega-3s have also been linked to clearing up dry eyes as well as treating depression and behavioral disorders. They may not save you from cancer, but they could save you from heart disease and a number of other health problems, so don’t give up on these crucial fatty acids just yet.
