Pets make a wonderful addition to a home, for numerous reasons. My dog allows me to get the exercise I need and he shows me unconditional love. While it’s easy enough to make excuses as to why you cannot go walking in the rain, you cannot make the same excuses for a dog that is barking at the front door, wagging his tail in anticipation.
Every member of my family has benefited drastically in the weight department since we acquired our golden retriever. He also brings us closer together as well. We have a common bond thanks to our dog, and we have to work together to ensure that someone cares for him at all times. This has forced us to communicate more as well.
However, one of the greatest gifts my dog has given me is companionship, which is why a lot of people love having pets in the house — and why a number of hospitals and nursing homes have pet therapy.
I remember going to visit my grandfather in the nursing home a while back, and was amazed by the number of residents who would look forward to the day the dogs came to visit.
The interaction between a person and their pet is beneficial in so many ways — especially when it comes to health. Petting your dog, playing with your cat, or watching your fish swim is said to lower blood pressure and reduce stress, which is beneficial in reducing other ailments that are related to high blood pressure and too much stress.
The fact of the matter is that many of us treat our pets as though they are part of the family. This special relationship provides people with constant interaction and companionship. Many studies have shown that seniors who interact with others are, in fact, healthier and live for longer than do those who stay at home and have no outside interaction with others.
Also, if you are out walking your dog, you are getting exercise, too, which is beneficial to your health.
Oftentimes, as we get older, we get lonelier. We have fewer interactions with others and our friends are not around as often. However, a dog will be there for you. It gives you someone to talk to, to socialize with, to watch television with, eat dinner with, etc. Just having a pet listen to you think aloud and to care for is beneficial to your health.
In addition, animals seem to have a sixth sense about their owners. I know that if I am under the weather, both my dog and my cat crawl into the bed with me and seemingly watch out for me until I am feeling better again.
Different animals provide different benefits — but they all help us to smile and see the positive side of things. Many studies have found that animals help us live longer, and make us nice and all around better people. People often see those who have animals as being more caring and sensitive as well. Think about all the high-profile people who have their pets with them at all times!
Not to mention, just think about all the people that you will meet when you are out walking your dog. You could acquire a whole other social group thanks to your pet, which is fantastic for your general health and well being.
The advantages of having a pet are endless — especially in relation to your mind, your heart, and your health. More than anything, they can bring joy and companionship to your life.
If you are looking to bring a pet into your home, why not venture over to the local Humane Society and adopt a pet that is looking for a caring owner? Both you and the animal you adopt will benefit immensely from it!
