A powerful and important new study has illustrated how important exercise is for those with type 2 diabetes. Getting exercise is a part of all the best health advice and certainly all doctors’ advice As part of one of the recent health breakthroughs in the treatment of diabetes, researchers found that having a structured exercise training that includes both aerobic and resistance training was linked to greater glucose control for patients with diabetes.
The study, in the prestigious “Journal of the American Medical Association,” also found that longer weekly exercise duration was linked with greater glycemic control.
Exercise is a cornerstone of diabetes management. Experts recommend that patients perform at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise and perform resistance exercise three times per week. And, sure enough, the study found that regular exercise improves glucose control in diabetics.
It was a study that looked at past studies and assessed the compiled results. Overall, structured exercise training (23 studies) was linked with measures of better blood glucose control compared to control participants. Also, structured aerobic exercise structured resistance training and both combined were each linked with these measures.
One hundred and fifty minutes is equal to two-and-a-half hours a week, which isn’t a huge number. It’s an achievable level of exercise. The researchers said that exercise will only work for glycemic control when combined with a proper diet.
It is critical to choose healthy foods and maintain a healthy weight. Losing just five percent of your body weight if you’re overweight can make a significant difference in your blood sugar control. A healthy diet is one full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes and one that limits saturated fat.
Other tips on diabetes management:
– Try to limit and control your stress levels
– Wear a tag or bracelet that identifies you as a diabetic
– Get an annual physical and regular eye check-ups, and get immunizations like the flu shot, because your immune system is weakened
– Monitor the health of your feet and be sure to keep them clean and dry
– Practice good oral hygiene
– Monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels
– Try to quit smoking if you do smoke
– Drink alcohol only in moderation
