One thing on a lot of people’s minds is the bathroom scale. Here, I address the evidence about how the drink could help you shed pounds and fight obesity overall.

Obesity is an epidemic in the U.S. It contributes to many diseases, including type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, cancer, hypertension, and coronary heart diseases. It is now accepted that even modestly shedding pounds by five percent to 10% can translate into major health benefits. With this being such a big concern, there is growing interest in the use of natural herbal supplements in weight control. And green tea, in particular, as it seems to be able to help the body use up more energy and burn more fat.

The following studies show encouraging results on the subject of green tea and the battle of the bulge:

2005: In 35 healthy men, green tea at 690 milligrams (mg) of catechins a day was tested for 12 weeks. This lowered body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, body fat mass, and subcutaneous fat area compared to placebo.

2005: In 76 moderately obese people (some with high caffeine and some with low caffeine intake), green tea with 270 mg of “epigallocatechin gallate” (EGCG), a type of catechin, plus 150 mg of caffeine per day was tested for three months. The high caffeine consumers reduced weight, fat mass, and waist circumference more than the low caffeine consumers. Still, for the latter, green tea still reduced body weight, waist size, and body fat.

2007: This study looked at 38 overweight or obese postmenopausal women who walked three times a week for 45 minutes. For 12 weeks, the women took a 150-mg capsule of EGCG twice a day. There was no difference between the effects of EGCG and placebo on waist circumference, total body fat, or abdominal fat. EGCG reduced heart rate and blood sugar levels.

2007: This one consisted of 240 obese adults who took green tea (583 mg of catechins) per day for 12 weeks. Green tea reduced body weight, body mass index, body fat ratio, body fat mass, waist circumference, hip circumference, and visceral and subcutaneous fat as compared to the control group. What’s more: green tea led to decreases in blood pressure and LDL cholesterol.
