Are Your Silver Fillings Toxic? Find Out Here!Holistic dentistry has been around for a while now, but many people still use the same old practices when it comes to taking care of their teeth. This could pose potential health problems, as traditional silver fillings contain mercury. In fact, according to a recent study, amalgams can push up mercury levels in your body significantly.

U.S. researchers observed that urinary mercury levels increased by 18% to 52% among eight- to 18-year-old individuals, respectively, with an average exposure to amalgams, in comparison to study subjects with no exposure to amalgams. The research team said the results of their study suggest that dental amalgams contribute to ongoing mercury exposure in a dose-dependent fashion.

You may already be aware of the current debate surrounding silver amalgam fillings. Silver amalgam fillings have been a popular choice amongst dentists in the past because they’re strong, adhere to your teeth well, and are relatively inexpensive. But, unfortunately, silver fillings contain mercury, which is known to cause a number of health problems.

A holistic dentist will minimize, or likely eliminate altogether, the use of amalgam fillings. Instead, they will use less toxic ceramic fillings as an alternative remedy for filling your cavities.

Keep in mind that the goal in holistic dentistry is to focus on your overall health, rather than just the teeth and gums. Holistic dentists use techniques that try to prevent common dental problems like tooth decay, tooth loss, and gum disease. These techniques are not “quick fixes,” such as extracting a discolored tooth and replacing it with a false tooth. Rather, the techniques try to correct dental problems in an effort to rebalance the rest of your body at the same time. Maybe it’s time to at least check out a holistic dentist in your area.
