stress-management tipsFeeling so stressed out that it’s making you sick? You’re not alone. And I have some easy alternative stress-management tips that could be the answer, plus a few more natural ideas!

Everyone deals with stress from time to time. Busy work schedules, financial woes, city traffic, raising children and grandchildren, family drama, and health concerns can each drive our stress levels up a few notches.

But some people deal with stress on a daily basis. And it can be debilitating, making us want to resort to our fight-or-flight instincts. Prolonged stress impacts the body in ways similar to an unhealthy diet, lack of sleep, or sedentary lifestyle. But stress does not have to control your life anymore. Today I’m going to share my top two valuable tips that can help you take control of your life, and live happier and healthier. Plus a few bonus stress-fighting ideas!

How Stress Impacts Your Health

Did you know that 75% to 90% of all visits to the doctor are related to health conditions brought on by stress? Stress might seem like an invisible condition, but it really can have a negative effect on your physical health: It can affect your hormone levels, inflammation in your body, your blood pressure, and so much more.

If stress is experienced over a long period of time, and is not properly managed, it is considered “chronic” stress. Chronic stress is dangerous. And can potentially increase your risk for autoimmune diseases, obesity, mental health conditions, heart disease, digestive disorders, diabetes, and cancer.

Unfortunately, stress is not something you just “get over.” If you’re dealing with a large amount of stress in life, studies have shown that you could benefit from taking time out of your daily routine, and incorporating some healthy habits. It’s also important to remember that the human body is designed to experience and manage stress. So, even if you feel overwhelmed, you have more control than you think.

My Top 2 Alternative Stress-Management Tips

Instead of masking or avoiding stress by binge eating, consuming alcohol, melting down, or participating in other negative reactions to stress, here are my top alternative solutions that may actually help you in the long run.

1. Exercise and Yoga

The first top tip is something you can do at home, every day, for free. You could manage your stress instantly by adding daily exercise or yoga to your routine. Exercise is a natural remedy for anxiety because it releases endorphins in the brain, which act like painkillers and mood boosters. Physical activity also regulates your metabolism, sleep/wake cycles, blood sugar levels, and moods.

2. Meditation

The second top tip is to meditate or do devotional prayers. This method has been used for thousands of years to improve well-being and connection to other people. Meditation and prayer may lower physiological responses to stress, improve mental alertness, and help you overcome emotional and physical problems. Whether it’s anxiety and depression, or poor eating habits and substance use.

3. Other Tips for Stress-Free Living

Additional alternative stress-fighting tips include:

  • Trying acupuncture
  • Maintaining a nutrient-rich diet (especially vegetables and fruit)
  • Spending time outdoors and socializing
  • Keeping a journal
  • Using essential oils
  • Giving cognitive behavioral therapy a try

Try the Alternative Route

Researchers are continuing to explore new ways to understand and manage stress. And, by the looks of it, some of the results don’t cost a thing. During stressful periods of my life, I have turned to exercise and healthy eating to feel better overall. If you have been dealing with a lot of stress, instead of only seeking prescription medication, you might benefit from taking time out every day to try some of the tips above. I’m confident you will notice some relief for your stress and worry.
