The anti-aging market is pretty big and for good reason. People don’t like witnessing the effects of age, whether it is changes to the skin, increasingly problematic joints, or a host of other problems. But with a little effort, there is an enjoyable way to shave an entire decade off your biological age.
On your 60th birthday, you could instead have a 50-year-old body. Here’s how.
A new study from the “Archives of Internal Medicine” points a spotlight at something that has been much-discussed in scientific circles. The study found that to take 10 years off your body’s age, all you need to do is stay physically active. The fountain of youth is, in fact, exercise.
The researchers say that regular exercise has powerful anti-aging effects. And nobody has to take on the persona of an Olympic athlete to achieve this effect. The researchers agree with guidelines already set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
- Get at least 30 minutes of moderately intense exercise at least five days a week. This could be brisk walking.
OR
- Get at least 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity at least three days a week. At its most simple: jogging. What it adds up to is that an hour of jogging each week could over time make all your body’s tissues and functions 10 years younger.
The researchers used data on 2,400 adult twins, who filled out surveys detailing exercise, smoking and health history.
They also gave blood samples that were used to measure the length of chromosome tips on white blood cells. These things shorten slightly every time a cell divides. They are used, because of this, as a signal of aging. The study proved that active adults had longer chromosome tips than did sedentary people. It suggests that inactive people may be biologically older by 10 years compared to active people.
This link is controversial, but regarded as quite valuable at the same time.
The study supports what many others have found in the past. Physical activity not only betters health, but keeps everything running smoothly, which in essence keeps the body in a younger state.
Sometimes, the magic pill is not a pill at all, but instead your feet. Let them carry you to a longer life.
