Answer for DiabetesHere’s some health news about a tree native to India and the Philippines that could help people with diabetes. It’s called banaba, and it has been a folk remedy for hundreds of years.

A recent study conducted at the Suzuka University of Medical Science in Wei, Japan, has tracked down the compounds in banaba that are responsible for its glucose-lowering effects.

Banaba leaves contain a substance called corosolic acid. Corosolic acid helps your body break down sugars and carbohydrates so they can be transported throughout your body to be used as a source of energy. Apparently, corosolic acid has the ability to repair the connection between insulin and insulin receptors. What does this mean exactly? It means banaba leaf extract makes it much harder for your body to be in a state of insulin resistance.

Because banaba leaf extract has this ability to stimulate glucose transport into cells, it can play a significant role in helping diabetics to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. It’s also thought that banaba leaf extract could play a role in weight management. This is because fluctuations in blood sugar are often caused by hunger cravings that keep you reaching for carbs, such as sweets or breads. Banaba leaf could help control these cravings, and as a result, even out those ups and downs in blood sugar levels.

How effective is banaba leaf at controlling high blood sugar? The Japanese research team concluded that corosolic acid could decrease blood sugar levels within 60 minutes. Corosolic acid was also found to exhibit antihyperlipidemic (cholesterol-lowering) and antioxidant activities. For these reasons, banaba leaf extract may be beneficial in treating the symptoms associated with any form of metabolic syndrome.
