When you eat adequate levels of certain nutrients like B-vitamins (B1, folate, B12 and B6) and zinc, you’re giving your body the tools to limit inflammation. With these foods in your diet, it becomes increasingly difficult for chronic disease to blossom.
The standard American diet, which is rich in refined sugar, provides an ideal environment for chronic inflammation to thrive and thus spread the diseases listed earlier. The high-carb, high-fat diet that’s low in nutrition promotes post-meal inflammation that might be a major contributor to the development of illnesses, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. When you don’t get an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals, your body can’t ward off diseases. It’s almost as simple as that. Vitamins and minerals can actually protect your body from itself, by limiting inflammation.
What to Eat to Control Inflammation
So what do you need to eat? Well, it’s probably stuff you’ve heard is good for you in these letters before: leafy green vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and lean proteins, like eggs, fish, and chicken. In fact, as long as you’re eating fresh foods regularly and getting at least five servings of vegetables per day, you can keep inflammation at bay and limit your risk for a number of diseases.
