Knee Pain TreatmentsDid you know that the oils from avocado and soybean could help relieve knee pain?

Researchers discovered that a supplement called ASU could work wonders for those dealing with chronic knee pain. ASU stands for avocado/soybean unsaponifiables. ASU supplements are made up of oils that are extracted from avocado and soybean.

“Unsaponifiable” simply means that the oil is extracted from certain fibers within a food so that the oils can be easily absorbed into your body. ASU has proven to be an effective treatment for knee and hip pain.

In a clinical trial, Belgian researchers compared the effects of 300 mg or 600 mg daily of ASU in patients with knee osteoarthritis. A control group received a placebo. The study lasted three months and involved patients of both genders, aged 45 to 80 years.

The researchers discovered that the use of anti-inflammatory drugs decreased by more than 50% in the ASU group compared to the placebo group. The research team concluded that a dosage of 300 mg/day was effective in treating knee pain.

So, what about eating avocados and soy instead of the ASU supplement? Will the foods have the same pain-relieving effect? No, they won’t, according to the researchers. Even if you eat avocado and soy in large amounts every day, you won’t be able to get enough of the unsaponafiables to have a therapeutic effect.

Another remedy for knee pain that has shown good results in clinical trials is glucosamine. It’s been shown to be effective at easing arthritic pain and it seems to cause very few side effects for most people.

In a three-year, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study, 202 patients with knee osteoarthritis were recruited. The patients were divided into two groups. One received 1,500 mg daily of glucosamine sulphate, while the other acted as a placebo.

The researchers found that those taking the glucosamine sulphate experienced less painful symptoms and a much slower progression of the disease than those taking placebo. You can try taking up to 1,500 mg of glucosamine per day.
