Here’s a herb to add to your medicine cabinet: feverfew. Feverfew is a short perennial plant that blooms between July and October. This aromatic plant gives off a strong and bitter odor. When it comes to treating headaches and migraines, feverfew may be one of the best remedies out there.
Many medical experts consider migraine to be a medical condition. People who suffer from migraines can get headaches that can be quite severe. A migraine headache is usually an intense, throbbing pain on one side of the head, or sometimes both sides. Most people with migraine headache feel the pain in the temples or behind one eye or ear, although any part of the head can be involved. Besides pain, migraines can cause nausea and vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. If you suffer from this type of headache, you may see spots or flashing lights or have a temporary loss of vision.
Unfortunately, migraines can occur any time of the day, though they often start in the morning. The pain can last a few hours or as long one or two days. Some people get migraines once or twice a week, others less often. Migraine attacks can definitely interfere with your day-to-day life.
So what can feverfew do to help? It can be as effective as pain-blocking drugs because it has the ability to work both as an antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory agent. This means feverfew can help relieve some of the throbbing pain associated with headaches by reducing the size of the inflamed blood vessels in your brain.
In one clinical trial, feverfew was used to treat patients suffering from migraines. For a 16-week period, patients were given either a water-based extract of feverfew or a placebo. After the 16-week period, migraine frequency decreased to a greater degree in the feverfew group compared to the placebo group. The researchers concluded that feverfew extract is effective in the treatment of migraines and shows a favorable benefit-risk ratio when it comes to side effects.
Feverfew not only relieves headache and migraine symptoms, but it can relieve arthritic and rheumatic symptoms as well. It has also been used to treat menstrual irregularities, labor difficulties, skin conditions, stomachaches, and asthma. To relieve symptoms of headache and migraine, take a 250-milligram freeze-dried capsule in the morning. Make sure the product has at least 0.4% parthenolide.
