An eggnog Christmas drink is a classic holiday recipe that helps many get into the holiday spirit. Eggnog is a sweet, thick, and creamy holiday beverage that often includes rum. Eggnog became known as a holiday drink when it came to the U.S. in the 1700s.

Eggnog’s roots have been linked to 14th-century England and a drink called posset. It was a hot, milky, ale-like drink to which eggs were later added, and made the form closest to what eggnog is known as today.

Cinnamon, nutmeg, and eggnog alcohol content like sherry and brandy were added to keep the drink from spoiling. Rum was later added to eggnog when it came to the U.S.

Colonists once called rum or beer “grog,” and bartenders would serve rum in small wooden-carved mugs known as “noggins.” The drink then became egg-n-grog, and eventually by the 18th century, the term “eggnog” was born.

Today, eggnog Christmas drinks can be found stocked in supermarkets and grocery stores. However, you can also make your own.

This article will show you how to make eggnog in a variety of delicious ways. This will include various eggnog desserts, including eggnog Christmas cookies, an eggnog cake recipe, eggnog cake with rum, and eggnog ice cream.

Let’s get started …

Easy Eggnog Christmas Drink

This section will explore the eggnog Christmas drink, and how to make traditional eggnog both with and without alcohol.

1. Traditional Eggnog with Alcohol

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup organic heavy or double cream or coconut cream
  • 3 cups organic whole milk or almond milk
  • 5 organic eggs, separated
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup granulated brown or coconut sugar or stevia
  • 3/4 cup bourbon or dark rum

Directions:

  • In a saucepan, combine cream, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, and once boiled, remove it from the heat and allow for steeping.
  • In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until thick ribbons form when the whisk has lifted. Whisk the milk and continue to mix until it is nice and smooth. Add the alcohol and stir. You can refrigerate for up to three days.
  • Before serving, beat egg whites in a large bowl until soft peaks form. Gently fold the eggnog until it is well combined. Serve in chilled glasses, and garnish with nutmeg.

2. Non-Alcoholic Eggnog

Ingredients:

  • 6 large organic eggs and two yolks
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp brown or coconut sugar or stevia
  • 4 cups of organic whole milk or almond milk
  • 1/4 cup organic heavy cream or coconut cream, whipped to soft peaks
  • 1/4 tsp coarse gray salt
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg, and additional nutmeg for garnish
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Directions:

  • Combine eggs, egg yolks, salt, and sugar, in a heavy three- or four-quart pan, and whisk until well combined. Continue to whisk and pour milk in a slow and steady stream until it has been completely incorporated.
  • Turn the burner to the lowest setting. Place the pan on the burner, and stir continuously until it reaches 160° Fahrenheit and the mixture thickens to coat the back of a spoon. It will take around 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Strain the mixture through a fine sieve and into a large bowl to remove any possible cooked pieces of egg. Add nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla extract, and stir well.
  • Pour into a glass pitcher or container, cover with a lid, and refrigerate for at least four hours, or up to three days.
  • When ready to serve, pour heavy cream into a bowl and whip it until soft peaks have formed. Fold the whipped cream into the custard mix until combined well.
  • Serve the eggnog in chilled glasses or cups, and garnish with nutmeg.

Eggnog Ice Cream

Eggnog ice cream will change the way you think of eggnog. When it comes to eggnog desserts, this ice cream with eggnog is perfect for the holidays as a side for your pumpkin pie or pecan pie. Let’s take a look at the simple recipe below.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans full-fat coconut milk
  • 2 cups organic eggnog
  • 1/4 tsp coarse gray salt
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp arrowroot starch
  • Optional: dairy-free chocolate chips

Directions:

  • Open cans of coconut milk, and set aside a half cup. Pour the rest of the coconut milk and eggnog into a two-quart saucepan. Add the honey, salt, vanilla extract, and nutmeg. Warm the coconut milk over medium-low heat, and stir occasionally. When the sweetener has dissolved, add it to the coconut milk for one to two minutes.
  • Whisk in the arrowroot starch with the reserved coconut milk, and whisk until starch has dissolved. Add the arrowroot starch to the warmed coconut milk and whisk gently.
  • You now have your ice cream base. Increase the heat to medium and stir occasionally, and continue cooking until it has thickened, for about six and eight minutes. Do not allow the base to come to a boil.
  • Remove from the heat, and stir in the vanilla.
  • Pour the base into a shallow container, and let it cool so it is not hot when you put into the refrigerator. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate four hours to three days.
  • Your base should now be completely chilled. Now, pour it into an ice cream machine and begin churning. Churn the ice cream until it thickens and becomes consistent with soft-serve ice cream. This can take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Transfer the ice cream to a freezer container, and press a piece of parchment paper against the surface to prevent ice crystals from forming. Seal the container. Freeze for at least four hours to harden the eggnog ice cream.
  • If ice cream is too hard, let it warm for a few minutes on the counter before scooping.
