Easy Way to Get HealthierWhile getting and staying in shape may seem like a huge undertaking with huge lifestyle changes like hours of exercise and a complete diet overhaul, there is something quick and easy to get you started—yoga. Yoga has been well documented as an effective method to reduce fatigue, insomnia, depression, and anxiety. It’s easy to learn, easy to do, and can be done anywhere.

Researchers from the University of Maryland examined the relationship between yoga practice and health (an umbrella term encompassing well-being, diet, body mass index (BMI), smoking habits, alcohol/caffeine consumption, sleep, fatigue, social support, mindfulness, and physical activity).

In the study, 4,307 people completed surveys regarding yoga practice and health. The research team found that those who did some home-based yoga scored higher when it came to living a healthy life. They had healthier BMIs, were more likely to eat fruits and vegetables, experienced better sleep, and suffered less fatigue.

Not only that, but each part of yoga practice—performing physical poses, controlling breathing, meditating, or studying philosophy—predicated at least one positive health outcome. The researchers also found that different physical poses and yoga techniques may have unique health benefits.

While yoga may not be the answer to every health problem, it’s a great way to feel immediate benefits and to lay the foundation for a healthier lifestyle.
