Travelers Let me tell you about my friend Nancy’s recent vacation travels. She had a fabulous time visiting breathtaking cities across Europe. Her first stop was the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Next was the famous Colosseum in Rome, Italy. In Budapest, Hungary, she fell in love with the city’s architectural beauty. She even enjoyed the exciting nightlife in the capital of the Netherlands—Amsterdam.

All that travel wasn’t without its challenges. You see Nancy suffered from jetlag after traveling by plane to Paris. Then when she took a train from Paris to Rome, she got motion sickness.

By the time she got to Amsterdam, her sleep patterns were all over the place. Some nights she didn’t even sleep at all. Pretty soon, Nancy started experiencing flu symptoms such as a dry cough, sore throat, fever, fatigue and weakness, runny nose, sneezing, and nausea and vomiting.

She thinks she might have picked up a virus at one of the local restaurants; however, travelers like Nancy are always at risk of getting the flu in any country.

Other travelers to African and South American countries are at risk of the deadly blood disease known as malaria that produces dreadful symptoms like multiple convulsions, impaired consciousness, jaundice, and respiratory distress. It is transmitted to humans by the Anopheles mosquito.

Homeopathic Remedies for Travelers

Traveling is not the time to get sick. I mean, you work hard, and vacations should be a time to relax and recharge. That is why it understandable that getting sick is not part of your travel itinerary.

As a frequent flyer or an adventurous road-tripper, I’m sure you pack everything from floss to an extra sweater.

Travelers should be prepared to treat unwanted illnesses and corresponding symptoms that can occur while traveling, including motion sickness, digestive problems, the flu, and even malaria. That is why I don’t go anywhere without my homeopathic remedies.

The following are 10 homeopathic remedies that I never leave the house without! You know, just in case…

1. Cantharis (Spanish fly)

Many people often head south during the fall and winter. Anywhere the sun shines you are at risk of sunburn. Luckily, cantharis is great for those spending too much time on a sunny beach. Cantharis is useful for relieving painful sunburns that may blister. The remedy is also useful for chronic bouts of diarrhea and insect bites and stings when on vacation.

2. Gelsemium (yellow jasmine)

Gelsemium is considered the top homeopathic remedy for jetlag since people who benefit from gelsemium often feel drowsy, droopy, dull, or experience flu-like symptoms. Gelsemium is also used for people who feel anxious before traveling, especially when the person experiences other symptoms such as diarrhea, weakness, and trembling. A 2011 study published in the journal Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that gelsemium 30 CH influenced emotional response, which supports the use of the remedy for anxiety related symptoms.

3. Oscillococcinum

Oscillococcinum, or oscillo, is a brand name homeopathic product that is quite effective at reducing the effects of flu-like symptoms. The remedy is made from wild duck liver and heart, which are thought to be reservoirs for influenza viruses. A 2006 systematic review published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews found that oscillococcinum treatment reduced the length of the flu. There were four treatment trials and three prevention trials included in the study. At the first sign of the flu, it is best to take one dose of the remedy. Take a second dose two to three hours later, and a third dose later in the day or early the next morning.

4. Homeopathic malaria protocol

When traveling to African and South American countries, a homeopathic malaria protocol can offer protective effects against the disease. The malaria protocol includes taking the homeopathic malaria 30C remedy once a week during a trip, and once weekly for four weeks after your trip to prevent (or reduce) symptoms of malaria. China (Peruvian bark) is also used for malaria symptoms such as a fever. It is also used for insomnia, headaches, exhaustion due to illness, and digestive issues like gas and bloating. China 6C should be taken once daily for the other six days during the week of your trip, and for two weeks after your trip.

5. Aconitum napellus (monkshood)

Aconitum napellus is a great remedy to treat the fear of flying. It is also used to treat shock or fear that occurs during your flight, like the terror experienced during turbulence. The person that requires aconitum napellus may believe that the plane will crash and that death is near. Other symptoms include restlessness, heart palpitations, and perOne Symptom Travelers Shouldn’t Ignore spiration brought on by the claustrophobic atmosphere of sitting in economy class.

6. Belladonna (deadly nightshade):

Belladonna is often used for pounding headaches, fevers with high temperatures, and dry and hot skin. Other symptoms that require belladonna include muscle spasms, coughs and colds, intestinal worms, and restless sleep with twitching and problems falling asleep.

7. Rhus toxicodendron (poison ivy)

Many people enjoy participating in adventurous activities during their vacations such as hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing, and parasailing. On the other hand, you can really feel helpless being injured so far from home. Rhus toxicodendron may be the answer for you. The remedy is used for sprains, strains, and overexertion. Resting will stiffen the condition, and the pain eases with a gentle motion. Rhus toxicodendron may also be helpful for sunburns with blisters, rashes from poison oak and poison ivy, and arthritic flare-ups.

8. Pulsatilla (wind flower)

Pulsatilla is another one of the better homeopathic remedies for travelers. It is another good remedy to use when the flu strikes while on vacation. It is used when a fever alternates between cold and hot flashes, a lack of thirst, and maybe an earache. Other symptoms that require pulsatilla include violent coughing, sinusitis, and eye infections. Take pulsatilla when a cold or flu starts to develop while having some downtime during a vacation.

9. Cocculus indicus (Indian cockle)

Cocculus indicus is considered a great remedy for sea or motion sickness and nausea, especially when traveling on a plane, train, or cruise ship. The homeopathic remedy is also used for vomiting, dizziness, muscle weakness, chronic headaches, mental fatigue, and vertigo. The person that requires cocculus indicus will feel so sick that they can’t tolerate the smell or thought of food. Other symptoms include indigestion, faintness, cramps, trembling, and numbness.

Many resorts these days open bars. As a result, people will sometimes consume more alcohol than usual.
