Impotence is one of the most frustrating conditions to strike men and, judging by the commercials, there is a pretty big market for treatments. Here are six Chinese remedies that may be effective in treating impotence:

1. Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan

This is the heavyweight. It can be modified to fit your particular symptoms, or possibly found in specialized herbal shops. It typically contains at least eight herbs, including several berries and plantain, and one study used it in people who’d injured their kidneys through too much panic and anxiety. Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan led to “encouraging” results used with the purpose of fixing the flow of Qi, revitalizing the kidney, and soothing the mind. Another found that the herb (in decoction form) led to full recovery for 28 people and improvement for 13.

2. Ginseng

Look for Korean red ginseng. In a good-quality trial, men used 900 milligrams of this, three times a day, for two months. Compared to placebo, ginseng led to significantly greater benefits. 3. Yang Huo Decoction

This formula, which you drink, contains around a dozen herbs, with ginger, cinnamon, mustard seed, and citrus leading the way. In one study, people took the formula once per day. Of 35 men, 26 significantly improved, five improved, and just four had no effect.

4. Jiao Tai

This pill is made of seven herbs, and is pretty well known among Chinese herbalists. In 86 people, 25 of them were able to engage in sexual activity for longer than three minutes. Seven did so for between two and three minutes. Another 17 men lasted one to two minutes.

5. Massage

You will need a practitioner that understands the theories of Chinese medicine for erectile dysfunction, as precise points on the body must be massaged. In one study, a practitioner massaged trigger points in the heel, midsection, buttocks, and lower abdomen among other places. Each session lasted 20 minutes. After 10 sessions, 41 men recovered their erectile dysfunction problem, while just three had no benefit.

6. Acupuncture

In 2003, a Western study proved that real acupuncture was superior to sham acupuncture in treating impotence. Chinese researchers used acupuncture along with mild electrical stimulation to several acupoints. The needles stayed in place for 30 minutes. Of 40 patients, 33 achieved erections, 28 recovered after one to two courses of treatment, and five after three courses.

In another study, researchers used acupuncture and also used various techniques with the needle, such as rotating it, lifting it up, and other techniques only an acupuncturist would understand. They tested it on 76 patients. Of them, 57 causes of impotence were resolved, seven significantly improved, and five improved.
