What Is a Keloid?

Let’s first understand what exactly a keloid is, as they can sometimes be confused with other types of scars. A keloid is a dome-shaped scar that expands over a larger space than the original wound. The wound may have been a cut, burn, pimple, piercing, or even markings from the chickenpox.

Other scars may differ in shape and appearance, and they form within the boundary of the wound. But, the keloid scar presents as a lump of tissue protruding above the skin surface and covering a large area outside of the wound. It can appear red, pink, or flesh-like in color, and may be itchy and tender.

Most cases of keloids occur in those between the ages of 10 and 20 years, and more commonly with dark skin. If you have a family member with keloids, you have more than a 50% chance of developing this form of scar yourself.

Keloid was first known as cheloide. It comes from the Greek term chele, which refers to a crab’s claw. A keloid normally grows into the skin sideways. They can be painful and once removed, a keloid may recur in the same scar tissue.

Preventative treatment with a wound may stop a keloid from forming. We will now look at how to get rid of a keloid naturally.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Keloids

While many medical treatments may offer positive results with removing the keloid skin scar tissue, you may want to try natural home remedies. We have compiled some common and popular ways on how to remove keloids.

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda can be used to exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells, debris, and dirt, which may help to diminish the appearance of the keloid.

Combine one teaspoon of baking soda with three teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide and mix well. Place the paste directly on the wound area and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing. Repeat three to four times daily, for up to one month.

2. Aloe Vera

The gel from the aloe vera plant is known to moisturize the skin and relieve itchiness. It also promotes skin regeneration, which may help to treat keloids.

Simply apply aloe vera gel directly on the affected area. Repeat five to six times each day for one week. For best results, use on scars that have recently developed.

3. Lemon Juice

The antioxidant known as vitamin C is plentiful in fresh lemon juice. It has the powerful ability to help get rid of scars. So, if you want to know how to flatten keloid scars naturally, just use lemon juice to regenerate your skin cells.

Squeeze the juice from a lemon and apply it directly on the scar for a 30-minute treatment. Rinse and repeat twice each day for one month. Dry the area and apply moisturizer on the skin after each treatment.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can reduce the size and appearance of a keloid scar by targeting the fatty deposit under the skin surface. It can also exfoliate your skin.

Combine two teaspoons of the vinegar with one teaspoon of water. Soak a cloth or cotton ball into the solution and dab it onto the scar. Leave it for 30 minutes before rinsing. Repeat three or four times each day over a two-week period.

5. Garlic

Since a keloid develops with fibroblast cells, use garlic to combat the growth of these cells.

Crush three or four cloves of garlic to create a paste to apply directly on the scar. After 15 minutes, wash the garlic off and apply moisturizer. Repeat once each day for one month.

6. Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is known as a skin cell rejuvenating oil, so it may help to prevent permanent scars from forming.

Apply the lavender oil onto the scar and massage for 15 minutes. Repeat one or two times each day for one month.

7. Olive Oil

Use 100% extra virgin olive oil to exfoliate the skin cells and eliminate scar tissue with its vitamin E and K components.

Apply one teaspoon of olive oil onto the affected area. Repeat throughout the day. You can also combine one teaspoon of olive oil and one teaspoon of baking soda to create a paste to place on the scar for a 10-minute treatment. Rinse and repeat at least once each day.

8. Onion

The powerful properties of the onion can also be found in many skin products for the production of collagen.

Cut a white onion into pieces and place them into a cheesecloth. Extract the juice from the onion pieces by compressing the cheesecloth. Apply the juice onto the scar and once it dries, rinse with warm water. Repeat three or four times each day.

9. Honey

Honey is a great way to get rid of keloids fast, as it promotes healthy blood circulation while stopping the excess growth of collagen and dead skin cells.

Massage organic honey on the scar area for 10 minutes. After one hour, rinse and repeat two times each day for two months.

10. Sandalwood

The regenerating components of sandalwood can help in smoothing the appearance of the scar.

Create a paste with rose or plain water and one tablespoon of sandalwood powder. Put it on the affected area for an overnight treatment. Rinse it in the morning and repeat each day for up to several weeks.

Treatment Options for Keloids

With the scarring of keloids, there are medical treatments that have been used to diminish their appearance. Quite often, the scar tissue can regrow, and the keloid may be bigger. Some of the other keloid treatments include:

  • Softening the tissue with moisturizers
  • Destroying skin cells with medical freezing methods, such as cryosurgery
  • Reducing inflammation with corticosteroid injections
  • Diminishing scar tissue with laser treatments
  • Applying silicone gel pads
  • Shrinking with radiation
  • Surgical removal with excision

Keloids can be a frightening sight, especially if they grow large and hang off the ear or face. A patch of scar tissue, these lumps extend over the edges of the wound to the extent of covering a large area. They can be red or skin-toned and raised in depth of size.

After treatment, these keloids can return. There are invasive and non-invasive treatment methods, as well as natural home treatments to diminish the appearance of the scar.
