While scars and stretch marks are common and most people have at least one, they are incredibly difficult to treat. Plus, stretch marks, in particular, affect up to 90% of women during and after pregnancy.
Now, getting rid of stretch marks and restoring youthful skin has become much easier, thanks to a new laser therapy system that’s being touted as the new way to remove stretch marks from the stomach, thighs, and breasts—with minimal pain and discomfort. (Kim Kardashian recently underwent the procedure to remove pregnancy-related stretch marks from her breasts after giving birth to her daughter, North.)
The new laser treatment uses heat to create further microscopic heat deep within the skin that leaves the surface completely untouched. The procedure bores microscopic holes in the skin to remove stretch marks and restore skin’s youthful appearance. These tiny injuries caused by the laser are said to cause the scar tissue to break down, triggering the body’s natural healing response and leading to youthful skin sans stretch marks. While that may sound a little intimidating, it’s important to note that there’s minimal pain and downtime after undergoing the procedure—especially compared to the side effects caused by previous laser technologies.
The new technology also utilizes a built-in scanner to assess a patient’s skin type to avoid any pigment changes when undergoing the treatment. Patients who have undergone the procedure report youthful skin, as well as a reduction in the appearance of stretch marks by 51%–75%, and that includes marks that are several years old.
But the procedure isn’t just for women looking to erase their stretch marks; it can also be used to reduce the look of acne and surgical scars, as well as burns. While many treatments may not be effective against multiple forms of skin scars and imperfections, especially considering the differences between skin types, this new laser treatment can be adapted specifically to the patient’s needs, including scarring and skin types.
As with any treatment, it’s best to first consult with your doctor to see if this new laser technology is the right choice for you. Either way, these new developments in laser technology are definitely an exciting advancement in the treatment of stretch marks and scarring.
