Usually headaches fall into one of three categories. Muscular headaches include migraines and cluster headaches. Inflammatory headaches are usually caused by severe disorders such as tumors, aneurisms and infections. Tension headaches are by far the most common type and account for about 90% of all headache pain.

So what can you do when the throbbing starts? How about trying an herbal remedy?

Ginger is an ancient anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving spice. It contains two substances called gingerols and shogaols. It is thought that these two compounds could help fight migraines

Another great home remedy to try: cayenne. Cayenne contains a special ingredient called capsaicin. When you apply capsaicin topically, it can block a chemical involved in the nerve transmission of pain.

If you’re still not convinced that some potent headache remedies can be completely drug-free, consider the results of this clinical trial involving the use of peppermint oil. The trial was conducted by German researchers and involved 41 patients experiencing tension headaches. The patients were divided into groups and treated with a locally applied peppermint oil preparation, acetaminophen, or a placebo. The study included the analysis of 164 headache attacks. Patients were between the ages of 18 and 65 years of age.

The researchers found that a 10% peppermint oil in ethanol solution significantly reduced clinical headache intensity after 15 minutes. The peppermint oil proved to be just as effective as acetaminophen at reducing headache pain.

The research team concluded that peppermint oil effectively relieves tension-type headaches. In addition, they mentioned that peppermint oil was well tolerated and is a cost-effective treatment.

To use peppermint oil as a headache remedy, simply apply a drop or two to each temple and rub in gently. Peppermint oil helps to reduce the intensity of a headache by encouraging muscles to relax. Peppermint oil may also relieve headache tension simply by smell alone. The oil is commonly used in aromatherapy as a muscle relaxant.
