Alzheimer’s disease is sure making the health news rounds lately. What’s promising about this scary illness is how much we are able to help shield our minds from it. A brand new health breakthrough proposes that coffee could help older adults avoid dementia.
A new study monitoring the memory and thinking processes of people older than 65 found that those with higher blood caffeine levels avoided Alzheimer’s disease. And coffee was the main source of caffeine for them.
This is the first direct evidence that caffeine or coffee is linked to a reduced risk of dementia. The amazing results show that older adults who have mildly impaired memories won’t worsen to Alzheimer’s disease thanks to about three cups of coffee a day. The results support previous findings in mice.
Blood caffeine levels at the beginning of the study were 51% lower in people with mild cognitive impairment who progressed to dementia in two to four years of follow-up. Meanwhile, those who had stable mild cognitive impairment had caffeine levels equivalent to several cups of coffee. In fact, none of these people with that level of caffeine developed Alzheimer’s disease during the study
In mice, the researchers had found that caffeine interacts with some ingredient in coffee to boost blood levels of a critical factor that fights against dementia. While they do not say that drinking coffee will definitely shield you, moderate consumption could reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s or delay its onset.
Moderate caffeine/coffee intake also appears to reduce the risk of several other diseases related to aging, including Parkinson’s disease, stroke, type II diabetes, and breast cancer. Most of these cases have had observational proof and more controlled trials are needed to investigate further.
One landmark study earlier this year tracked the health of 400,000 older adults for 13 years. Those who drank coffee reduced their risk of dying from heart disease, lung disease, pneumonia, stroke, diabetes, infections, and even injuries and accidents.
It’s long been said that the only unhealthy aspects of a cup of coffee are the sugar and cream that many dump into it. Cups of coffee may have tremendous therapeutic value and may play huge roles in disease prevention. That includes the biggest diseases in the world and, in this case, one that cripples the mind and steals its memories.
