Healthy Fats Could Reduce the Risk for Parkinson’s

You probably already know that eating the right kind of fat is good for your heart. Healthy monounsaturated fat increases blood flow to your brain, too. And that means more oxygen and more nutrients getting to those parts of your brain that help you to think and to remember details.

Now, a study just recently published in the journal “Neurology” suggests that eating unsaturated fats may have a protective effect against Parkinson’s. A research team in the Netherlands looked closely at the diets of 5,300 men and women over the age of 55. None of the participants had any symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or dementia at the start of the study.

After six years, 51 of the participants went on to develop Parkinson’s. The researchers discovered that higher intakes of unsaturated fats — both mono- and polyunsaturated — were associated with a 30% decrease in risk for Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s disease is caused by a reduction in production of dopamine (a chemical in the body that affects movement) by specific cells in the brain. These cells have been either damaged or destroyed. Parkinson’s disease is associated with uncontrollable tremors and an inability to smoothly control muscle movement.

So what is an excellent source of unsaturated fats? How about avocados? Avocados are full of healthy fat. The average avocado contains about 14 minerals as well. So, don’t let avocados drop off your grocery list. With the fat-free craze that has become part of our culture of late, many do not get a dose of healthy fats with their diet. You’ll give your body the fat it needs, a whole bunch of nutrients, and the power to protect yourself from cognitive decline and nervous system disorders such as Parkinson’s.
